Description: I made this set of digital paintings to shed light on the excessive white privilege these three individuals were allotted in their interactions with police and the law. Everyday black men and women are profiled and discriminated against by law enforcement officers. They are very often subjugated to punishment in the highest degree during these interactions. They are spoken to condescendingly, dealt with violently, and unjustly arrested. In extreme but far too common cases, they are murdered by officers for no reason whatsoever. However, if you are a rich, white celebrity, you can get away with practically anything. Justin Bieber, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan have all driven drunk or high, yelled at officers, resisted arrest, broke probation, or have not appeared in court. They were all given short sentences or were bailed out with no harm done to them and their reputations slightly bruised but still intact. Black individuals who have done the same or less than what these celebrities have done were administered the highest penalties. Their lives were stripped away by forcing them into life sentences or their lives were cut short by being killed before they could even be put into handcuffs. The most recent mugshot I painted was Justin Bieber’s 2014 DUI arrest. So, it has been a couple years since these incidents have occurred, but this just goes to show how much more privilege and life these celebrities were granted. I wanted to paint their mugshots because of how they are presented in that moment. Paris Hilton looks glamorous with her hair in waves and cast to the side. She is not worried in the least about her situation. You can see that the years of partying have affected Lindsay Lohan in her mugshot, but her hair is still freshly bleach and her lips recently plumped. In Justin Bieber’s mugshot he is beaming. His eyes are glassy, showing his lack of sobriety, and his facial expression shows that he will not only live another day, but continue to make millions of dollars for the rest of his life. A mugshot is usually the lowest point in your life, but for these celebrities they’ll be forgotten in no time. They are the poster children for white privilege.
